True orthodontic emergencies are very rare. The first thing to remember: don’t panic.
As a general rule, you should call the office if you experience severe pain, or have a painful appliance problem that you can’t take care of yourself. But you might also be surprised to learn that you may be able to temporarily solve many problems yourself until you can come in. For example:
- If a piece falls off, please save it and bring it to the office.
- Before your visit, use the back of a spoon, the eraser end of a pencil, or a tweezer to gently push any loose wires back into place.
- If a broken or loose wire or bracket is irritating your lips or cheeks, cover it with dental wax or a wet cotton ball.
- If your headgear facebow is bent, please call our office for assistance.
